Halstead Ave. troubles in Mamaroneck

Friday, March 2nd, 2007

Corinne DiMartino just called from Furhmann Kitchens at 253 Halstead Avenue in Mamaroneck, near the train station, to say a nearby stream has flooded so severely the water is about to wash over the bridge on that road.

“We’re going to have quite a flood here,” she said.

Her boss, Manfred Furhmann, said he thinks he knows what’s happening. Fuhrmann said the arch of the bridge on Valley Place is too small to handle the rush of water, backing it up on the Mamaroneck River toward his shop. Fuhrmann said the bridge had also been clogged with debris, but the downpours flushed that out.

Cars submerged in Port Chester, couple fears mold from basement flood

Friday, March 2nd, 2007

From reporter Nicole Neroulias:

Port Chester residents Louie and Donna Miller, of 24 Wesley Road, called 911 at 8:30 a.m. Friday when a station wagon got stuck on their flooded block between Perry and Irving avenues. Two hours later, the abandoned Chevrolet remained parked in the middle of the street, its windshield wipers still swishing back and forth as water slowly receded.
A few blocks away, local firefighters had also rescued another drive from a partially submerged car on the 100 block of Breckenridge Avenue.
Both blocks remained closed Friday morning with police barricades.
“It always gets like this around this neighborhood, said Louie Miller, whose backyard and basement were under more than six inches of water Friday morning. “I don’t know why people try to drive through.
The Millers, who have lived in the two-story house since 1975, said flooding had not been this bad in at least seven years.
From the cracks in the concrete basement floor, more water could be seen bubbling up from underground springs as their electric sub-pump labored to bring levels down.
“It’s a geyser down here, Louie Miller said.
Donna Miller, who received a double lung transplant two years ago, put on a surgical mask when she saw the trapped moisture and said she was also worried about a neighbor with emphysema.
“This is all going to turn into mold, she said, fearfully scanning the flooding from the top of the basement stairs.
